Methodology Related To Census Tract Division:
A given market area may comprise several entire Census tracts and only a portion of another. When just parts of the Census tracts are in the user-defined market, only the specific geographic areas that lie within the market are included in the area demographic report.
Whatever percentage of the Census tract's geographical area that is enclosed in the user-defined market area is used in the calculation, not the shares of the various demographic profiles represented there.
Consequently, caution should be excercised when using this tool. When only a percentage of a Census tract falls within the user-defined market, the demographics of the entire tract are divided by that value. Realistically, however, the part of the Census tract actually within the market area may contain smaller or larger shares of the various demographics than the shares of the Census tract's geographical area not included.
In instances where fragments of multiple Census tracts are included, the average of the coverage is used to calculate the applied percentage; the data is then rounded to the nearest whole number.
